The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit. Each year's event celebrates the theme of that year's Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night since guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. Each year the event also has honorary celebrity event day chairpersons.
Rihanna hit the red carpet in a Guo Pei haute couture gown with a heavy (and very long) embroidered train at the Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday in New York City. This year's theme celebrates the museum's Costume Institute exhibition, "China: Through the Looking Glass."
Introduction of The Great Queen:
This gown is one of the haute couture piece from Guo Pei’ s fashion show in 2009, The Arabian 1002th Night. There are four images of queen in the whole inspiration story and this piece The Great Queen is one of them.
Why does Guo Pei take queen as the inspiration of design? Because Guo Pei thought that queen is the most beautiful and powerful women in this world. Also, the more beauty and power she has, the more responsibilities she will take. There’s a saying “if you want to wear the crown, while you should support the its weight”. The beauty of the queen comes from the power of hiding in her heart, from the brave of taking responsibility, from the sacrifice of not seeking anything in return. When the Great Queen comes into our sight with its glory and brilliance, it also brings the symbol of supreme royal authority and enormous responsibility and assume.
It takes almost 6000 hours to finish The Great Queen. And there’re lots of embroidery patterns on the three meters’ trailing, likes classic flowers and symbol of royal authority. Guo Pei takes Chinese royal embroidery craft as the basic and chooses the thread from India to enhance the visual effect, which both could make the three-dimension of the patterns more vividly. In China, the color yellow represents emperor. Guo Pei combined the color yellow from Chinese with mantle style from Western together to express the sense of power. Meanwhile, the long trailing looks like a shining sun blossom a dazzling brilliance when it opened.
There’s a history when we talking about The Great Queen. On the fashion show in 2009, we chose an experienced model to display this gown. As it happens, this model just having a baby and this is her first show for her coming-back. She was so nervous and worried about the weight of the gown that she could not afford after the first rehearsal. But we could not find another model to replace her at that time. So Guo Pei encouraged her to hang on constantly. On the next day, she still feels nervous so that she took 10 minutes on the stage, which is just 40 meters long. Fortunately, all the audiences showed applause to her and she made it. Even though this gown gave us a deep impression on that fashion show, there’s still a little pity that it was not displayed as a “Queen” blossoming a dazzling brilliance. This time, on the Met Gala, wearing in this gown, Rihanna looks like a real queen and it feels like she gives this gown a second birth. As expected, it comes into the worldwide sight with its new look.
