VOGUE & MUSEO THYSSEN-BORNEMISZA —VOGUE Like a Painting

Guo Pei dreamt of creating beauty since she was a child, and she finally made it true as a grown-up. This is Guo Pei, the designer who dressed Rihanna at the Met, seduced Anna Wintour and, current participant in the exhibition Vogue: Like a Painting is ready to conquer the West.

The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid and Conde Nast Spain are currently organizing an exhibition titled VOGUE: Like a Painting scheduled for Jun 30 to October 12, 2015.

Debra Smith, Creative Director of Special Projects of Conde Nast Spain and curator of the show, has selected around sixty pieces by the leading photographers of the past three decades from the archives of Vogue and explores the theme of seeking pictorial inspiration in fashion photography.

The painting used as a model, and chiefly the genre of portraiture, provides a survey of Spanish Golden Age art, Dutch portraiture, the Victorian period and the European painting tradition in royal collections. References to Constable and Zuloaga are obligatory, but also to Sorolla and the Pre-Raphaelites. A whole universe of beauty based around woman, from the photographers who have contributed to shaoping the image of Vogue magazine in recent decades and have served as an example for many contemporary artists.

The leading names in classic fashion photography are combined with the talent of new generations in this exhibition. The artists featured include Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz, Tim Walker, Paolo Roversi, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, David Sims, Erwin Olaf, Mario Sorrenti, Michael Thompson and Peter Lendbegh, among many others.

The curator would also like to include in the exhibition Guo Pei’s magnificent haute couture dress Queen Orchid, to be installed in the last room of the show as finale of the exhibition.
